KCRS Womens' Cooperative
KCRS (Kinini Cooperative Rusiga Sector) is an all female co-op of coffee farmers. The co-op was established by Jacqueline Turner 10 years ago to support widows and orphans whose lives were devastated by the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Jacquie (and her business partner Malcolm Clear) established A New Beginning charity building a school, medical centre, community and safe water source in this region supported by funds generated by Kinini coffee sales. The co-operative is now owned by the farmers who continue to support A New Beginning.
85% of the farmers that make up the KCRS Womens' Cooperative have farms 2000 metres above sea level. They produce a diverse range of crops including legumes, beans and sweet potatoes in between their coffee trees. This allows their income to be spread across all seasons and even leaves food to consume themselves. The cooperative is made up of 12 different groups close to different villages making training and travelling easier for the women. These women are now expert farmers.
